Requirements for SWS UMEB mentors are:

 

1)      Be in attendance for the entire meeting (beginning with the Sunday orientation and ending with the Friday luncheon).

 

2)      Been to recent meetings (at least two).

 

3)      Member of SWS.

 

4)      Interested in mentoring undergraduates and willing to spend time at the meeting with the student including:

 

a)      Mentor/Mentee orientation (5:00 pm on Sunday).

 

b)      Luncheon with mentors and mentees on Friday (12:30).

 

c)      Mentors should also attend the Tuesday and Thursday luncheons with the student.

 

d)      Very important: Be willing to meet with the mentee at mutually agreeable times and help him or her navigate the meeting.  All mentors should meet with their students at least once a day in the early morning to discuss the day’s schedule. Provide guidance on talks or posters they might want to attend or visit; who they should talk to vis-à-vis different career paths in ecology; how to manage their time at scientific meetings; and convey a love for and optimism about the profession.  Encourage them to seek out talks and posters that are appropriate to their interests.
